Ferienhaus T

Ferienhaus T

Built in 2011-2012, based on Thomas Schütte’s project from 2002.

Architectural structures play an important role next to the figures in Thomas Schütte’s powerfully pictorial art. Schütte has used many methods of representation, including drawings, prints, and models of various scales. Even a building created according to his model, Ferienhaus T (Holiday Home T), was not built only for use, but also exists in the world as an image. Images are ambiguous, they tell stories and design possibilities. Because Schütte works on this theoretical basis and models ideas, he possesses the freedom to help himself to images form the most varied of contexts—a fairytale past in which castles rise with monumental halls and walls, and at the same time modernism, with its abstract sculptural forms and the promises of transparency in the glass facade. The holiday home now standing in the mountains of Tirol resembles an other-worldly castle. Structures appear in Schütte’s imagination in varying disguises as outposts promising introspection and external observation.
